چکیده

Maria Olkkonen Terhi Mustonen Abstract — In this study, the effect of vibration on mobile-phone text legibility caused by walking was examined. Legibility was measured as reading performance and subjective task load when reading from a mobile-phone display while walking on a treadmill at 1.5 km/hour, 3 km/hour, and an individually defined speed (3.9 km/hour on average). Vibration was measured on the vertical, lateral, and fore-and-aft axes during walking. Vibration amplitude was calculated in five different frequency bands (1, 2, 4, 8, and 16 Hz), and correlated with the legibility measures. The amplitude increased most on the vertical and fore-and-aft axes as a function of walking speed, and the increase was largest in the 2-Hz frequency band. Legibility decreased concurrently with increasing vibration. The strong correlation between vibration characteristics and legibility measures suggests that vibration characteristics could, to some degree, be used in estimating small-display legibility while walking.

Effects of Aging and Display Contrast on the Legibility of Characters on Mobile Phone Screens

Nowadays, mobile phones are very popular in the world. The use of text email with short message service (SMS) is spreading. In this study, we evaluated the legibility of characters on the liquid crystal displays of mobile phones. When characters are small, younger people assure readability by shortening the viewing distance. However, elderly people find it far more difficult to see small charac...

Vibration Analysis of Multi-Step Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko Beams Carrying Concentrated Masses

In this paper, vibration analysis of multiple-stepped Bernoulli-Euler and Timoshenko beams carrying point masses is presented analytically for various boundary conditions. Each attached element is considered to have both translational and rotational inertias. The method of solution is “transfer matrix method” which is based on the changes in the vibration modes at the vicinity of any discontinu...

Modified Couple Stress Theory for Vibration of Embedded Bioliquid-Filled Microtubules under Walking a Motor Protein Including Surface Effects

Microtubules (MTs) are fibrous and tube-like cell substructures exist in cytoplasm of cells which play a vital role in many cellular processes. Surface effects on the vibration of bioliquid MTs surrounded by cytoplasm is investigated in this study. The emphasis is placed on the effect of the motor protein motion on the MTs. The MT is modeled as an orthotropic beam and the surrounded cytoplasm i...
